Alan Turing was a British mathematician, logician, and computer scientist whose work fundamentally changed the course of modern technology and helped end World War II. Born in 1912 in London, Turing showed early brilliance in mathematics and science.
The Turing Machine
In 1936, Turing published “On Computable Numbers,” introducing the concept of a theoretical computing machine that could solve any problem expressible as an algorithm. The Turing machine became a foundational model for the theory of computation and the development of modern computers.
Breaking the Enigma Code
During World War II, Turing worked at Bletchley Park, Britain’s codebreaking center. He played a central role in breaking the German Enigma cipher, designing the electromechanical Bombe machine that accelerated decryption. Historians estimate that this work shortened the war in Europe by several years and saved millions of lives.
Early Computers and Artificial Intelligence
After the war, Turing contributed to the design of early stored-program computers, including the ACE (Automatic Computing Engine). In 1950, he proposed what became known as the Turing Test, a criterion for determining whether a machine can exhibit intelligent behavior indistinguishable from a human.
Persecution and Legacy
Turing was prosecuted in 1952 for homosexual acts, then illegal in the United Kingdom, and subjected to chemical castration as an alternative to prison. He died in 1954 from cyanide poisoning, officially ruled a suicide. His contributions remained classified for decades. In 2009, the British government formally apologized, and in 2013 he received a posthumous royal pardon. Turing is now widely recognized as the father of theoretical computer science and artificial intelligence. The Turing Award, the highest honor in computer science, is named in his honor.
