Galileo Galilei was an Italian astronomer, physicist, and engineer whose pioneering use of the telescope and experimental method earned him the title “father of modern science.” Born in Pisa in 1564, Galileo challenged centuries of Aristotelian physics and transformed humanity’s understanding of the cosmos.
Early Work and the Scientific Method
Galileo began his career studying motion and mechanics. He conducted experiments on falling bodies and developed the concept of inertia, later formalized by Isaac Newton. His insistence on observation and measurement over philosophical authority became a cornerstone of the scientific method.
The Telescope and Astronomical Discoveries
In 1609, Galileo improved the design of the telescope and turned it toward the heavens. His observations revolutionized astronomy:
- He discovered the four largest moons of Jupiter (the Galilean moons).
- He observed the phases of Venus, supporting the heliocentric model.
- He mapped the craters of the Moon and the sunspots.
- He revealed that the Milky Way was composed of countless stars.
These findings provided strong evidence for the Copernican theory that the Earth orbits the Sun.
Conflict with the Church
Galileo’s support for heliocentrism brought him into conflict with the Catholic Church, which held the geocentric view as doctrine. In 1633, he was tried by the Roman Inquisition, forced to recant, and spent the rest of his life under house arrest. Despite this, he continued to write and study.
Legacy
Galileo died in 1642. His work laid the foundation for classical mechanics and modern astronomy. He demonstrated that the universe could be understood through mathematics and observation, a principle that still drives science today. In 1992, the Catholic Church formally acknowledged errors in its treatment of Galileo.
