Nikola Tesla was a Serbian-American inventor, electrical engineer, and futurist whose work laid the foundation for modern alternating current (AC) electricity systems. Born in 1856 in Smiljan, in present-day Croatia, Tesla displayed a remarkable aptitude for mathematics and physics from an early age.

Early Life and Education

Tesla studied engineering at the Austrian Polytechnic in Graz and later at the University of Prague. During his studies, he became fascinated with the idea of an alternating current motor that would be more efficient than the direct current (DC) systems of the time. After working for the Continental Edison Company in Paris, he emigrated to the United States in 1884 and briefly worked for Thomas Edison.

The War of the Currents

Tesla’s breakthrough came with the development of the induction motor and the polyphase alternating current system. His patents were licensed by George Westinghouse, leading to a fierce rivalry with Thomas Edison, who promoted direct current. The “War of the Currents” ended with AC’s victory, demonstrated most dramatically by the lighting of the 1893 World’s Columbian Exposition in Chicago and the construction of the first large-scale hydroelectric power plant at Niagara Falls.

Inventions and Visionary Ideas

Tesla held over 300 patents and made pioneering contributions to:

  • Alternating current power systems
  • The Tesla coil, used in radio technology and early wireless experiments
  • Wireless communication and remote control
  • Early X-ray imaging
  • Concepts of wireless power transmission

His Wardenclyffe Tower project was an ambitious attempt to transmit power and information wirelessly across the globe, but financial difficulties prevented its completion.

Later Years and Legacy

Tesla spent his later years in relative obscurity, often living in hotels and continuing to work on new ideas. He died in 1943 in New York City. Today, Tesla is celebrated as one of history’s greatest inventors. His name lives on in the SI unit of magnetic flux density (the tesla), in electric car company Tesla, Inc., and in countless references to his futuristic vision. His work on alternating current remains the backbone of the modern electrical grid.
